I was working at Dayton Pool Management when I first started painting with watercolors. The environment and the people I interacted with there really influenced my creative direction, sparking a series of watercolor paintings that explore themes of identity and the daily rhythm of life.
This painting in particular reminded me of a gentleman I used to visit after work who smoked high-end "spliffs." I have gradually come to realize that names and memories just elude me. I spent a great deal of time in and around some of the more flamboyant poolside scenes in Montgomery and Warren counties.
I added the Mohawk Lizard again because I just love that painting. Recently, while working on some commercial jobs, I discovered some "ink in a bottle, pencils" during a residential cleanout. I was incredibly excited to discover such a beautiful thing I never knew existed. I can't believe no one told me about them! The ones I found were vintage. I've always been a bit whimsical about watercolors, and ink is so permanent, so the idea of doing a portrait is a bit daunting!
I did a couple of them back to back to see what, if anything, I learned along the way. But, at the end of the day, I ended up liking them both.
